IMPORTANT EVENTS & FESTIVALS

Namchi Mahotsav: It is a week long festival held every October at Namchi which showcases the three district communities of Sikkim (Bhutia, Lepcha, Nepali) with their tradition, culture, cuisines and life style. One can come and experience the rich cultural diversity.

 

Pang Lhabsol: It is celebrated on 15th day of the 7th month of lunar calendar at Ravangla. Guru Rimpoche when he visited Sikkim came upon hundreds of evil spirits which were controlling Sikkim, he tamed these evil spirit and made them the protectors of Sikkim and every year Pang Lhabsol is celebrated in thanking and worshiping the guardian deities of which mt. Kanchenjunga is one of them.

 

Maghey mela: It is celebrated at Jorethang every year during Makhar Sakranti in January. It started as an agricultural fair and has evolved into a week long festival where traditional handicrafts, cultural shows, cuisines and rural sports are displayed.

 

Rankey mela:  It is celebrated in Namchi on the first day of Sawan (nepali calendar), which is mid-July every year. It is a celebration and welcoming the rainy season after drought period with the burning of effigy of Rankey ghost. A daylong programme of rural sports is held.

 

Ravangla discovered:  It is a tourist festival the theme of this year was “handicrafts” it was a platform where handicrafts from Sikkim, Bhutan and north-east states were exhibited and it was sale-cum demonstration of handicrafts with cultural show and musical extravagance. It is organized in the month of March-April every year.
